One of the hardest things I found to do today, was write this article. I got a teaser of Spring weather the other day, and then the high winds kicked in for a couple days.
We got spoiled last year, by having a very short winter. Of course, I’m sure Utah’s skiers would argue that last year’s short winter spoiled their skiing.
In any case, every good day we get, I’m seeing more motorcycles on the roads and more kids out playing. For that matter, we’re starting to see more visitors to our 55+ communities again.
That means more people are getting excited about moving again.

Fun Spring-time ideas
Fishing
One thing I’m looking forward to is going fishing. I didn’t get out and do much ice fishing this winter, but I plan to make the most of this Spring. The first place I plan on fishing is right here in Utah county.
Utah Lake is a great place for everyone, especially seniors, to go fishing in the Spring. That’s because the ice has come off, you can launch a boat, and take your grandkids out for a half day or even full day of fishing.
Don’t have a boat? No problem, the fish are easily caught from the shore as well, especially the white bass. If you catch them when they’re schooled together, which usually happens between now and May, then you can catch them on almost every cast.
What could be more fun than to take a young fisher out for their first few times and fill a bucket full of the small tasty fishes? You’ll be the favorite grandparent for sure!
In case you didn’t know, we also have two of our 55+ communities right next to Utah Lake. One is on the Saratoga Springs side, and the walking trails that lead to and around the lake are just across the street. Our other Active Adult Community is on the East side of the lake in the growing city of Vineyard. There, we’re only one or two blocks away from the shoreline.
Just be careful, if you move into one of those communities, your grandkids might want to visit you every day. I’m sure you’ll find a way to handle your new-found popularity.
Biking
When you think of retirement communities, do you think of riding bikes?
I’ve been staring at that bike in my garage for weeks now. I’ve even taken it out once or twice, but the weather has still been a bit cold for a lot of riding. Sure, some of you might think I’m being a pansy, but I like the weather to be a little better, especially since I’m no hard-core cyclist.
Biking is great for exercise, or like me, for simple commuting. I like to ride around my community and enjoy the fresh air.
Many of our 55+ communities are great for riding a bike. They often have looping roads, so you can bike around and say hello to all the neighbors. Some of our communities even have nearby trails. Saratoga Springs and Midas Creek Villas are great examples of this. They have walking and bike riding trails that are paved and provide access to the city for miles.
Home shopping
Yeah, I know, I had to throw this one in. But why not? Getting out of your house and into one of ours is likely the best choice you’ll make this decade!
I mean that, too. I’ve heard plenty of testimonials to that very effect.
Getting out and enjoying Spring is fun, but having a larger group of friends that you can play with makes the time even more exciting. It even helps when Winter rolls back around, since you have a large community clubhouse, dedicated to you and your neighbors.
